Totally tiled – The white tiled floor and walls and large mirror by the bath are a good choice in this small, high-ceilinged bathroom. The hard-edged effect is softened with plants, shells and fluffy towels. Plain or patterned tiles can be used to equally good effect in a modern or, as here, a more old-fashioned bathroom.
Special effects – Practical tiling to dado height is combined with the sophisticated marbled paint technique on the walls above. This effect is achieved by blending pastel green, pale cream and grey paint with a fine paintbrush and a sponge. Use a glaze or vinyl matt paint if you use special paint effects in a bathroom and protect your hard work from steam with a coat of clear matt varnish.
Diamond design – A tiled surface on a vanity unit is a useful and practical place to put bottles of shampoo and dishes of soap. Extending the diagonals up the splashback makes these plain white tiles look more distinctive. The two small mirrors continue the diamond pattern and are emphasised by an edging of wooden beading to match the louvred cupboard doors and window frame.
Classic simplicity – \/eneered wood has been stained and varnished for the bath panel and for the surround of the unusual inset brass basin. A matching dark wooden, slatted blind over the window directly above the bath is easy to wipe clean and preserves privacy while allowing light into this small room. Splash-resistant, rag roll-effect vinyl wallpaper gives an interesting texture to the walls.
Half panelled – Tongued-and-Grooved panelling ln a bathroom feels warm, ls practical and provides a good level of insulation. ln this traditional-looking bathroom, panelling up to the dado rail conceals the poorly plastered walls. To protect lt from steam and water, the wood has been painted ln a creamy coloured vinyl matt paint. Above the rail, the uneven walls are disguised by marbled wallpaper in cream, pale green and peach.
