The different types of kitchen tables

For people who do not have a formal dining room, or for those who simply prefer to eat in the relaxed atmosphere of the kitchen, the shape and size of the table are vital. Bear in mind that kitchen tables are usually round, oval, or rectangular, and each shape determines how people interact with one another. Table size is also worth considering because, although the room may be spacious, a large table may not be in keeping with the mood you wish to create, or how often you entertain.

ROUND TABLE

Useful for filling a square kitchen floor area, small, round tables offer an intimate setting for four people, and are democratic as no one sits at the head. Large, round tables are less successful because of their wide diameter, which leaves guests raising their voices to be heard.

OVAL TABLE

An oval is perhaps the most successful shape for seating six people, as everyone can make eye contact, The generous centre space stops the table-top from becoming overcrowded.

RECTANGULAR TABLE

For those who have a large Family or who love to entertain, choose a large, rectangular table that seats up to ten people. Here, eating is a communal activity, but of course, a dining table of this scale needs a large kitchen.
